Instrumenting Change

The series of Brazilian Symposia on Sustainable Building began in 2008 and aims to discuss, from the exchange of international perspectives and national intellectual and corporate leaderships, and to seek new guidelines for the building sector in themes like public policy, auto-regulation, conservation and use of alternative resource sources, informality, climate change adaptation and sustainability of urban models.

In its third edition, - SBCS10 - the Symposium will be held in November 08-09, 2010, at Amcham Business Center, in conjunction with the international conference Sustainable Building 2010 Brazil (SB10Brazil).

Sustainable Building 2010 Brazil (SB10Brazil) is one of the regional conferences on sustainable building organized in 2010 as preparation for the World SB 2011, to be held in Helsinki, Finland. This is the fifth edition of the global conference, the largest and most reputable within the academic community. At global level, organization is hosted by CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction), UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and iiSBE (International Initiative for a Sustainable Built Environment). The Brazilian edition is collaboration among UNICAMP, UFES, UFSC and CBCS, co-chaired by Prof. Vanessa Gomes (UNICAMP, CIB, iiSBE), Prof. Vahan Agopyan (CIB) and Marcelo Takaoka (Board - UNEP -SBCI).

SB10 Brazil marks the tenth anniversary of CIB 2000 - From theory to practice, one of the first large - scale attempts to foster and smooth the transition from sustainable building into practice in Brazil and Latin America. In the past decade, strong efforts have focused on leveling the playing field, on envisioning a more sustainable future for the country, and on exploring management and innovation for sustainable building.

SB10Brazil took the challenge of helping to instrument such change. Under the scientific coordination of Prof. Marina Ilha (UNICAMP), SB10Brazil invites contributions and case studies to push forward implementation and demonstration of advances on, among other subjects:
  1. Advanced building design and construction;
  2. Affordable social housing and settlements;
  3. Sustainable renovation and refurbishment;
  4. Sustainable urban models and infrastructure;
  5. Policy and legislation for SB;
  6. Integrated project delivery and updated contracting models;
  7. Methodologies and tools for sustainability assessment;
  8. Sustainable facility management;
  9. Business models for sustainable building; and
  10. Education and training for SB.

SB10Brazil Organizers encourage research institutes, universities and companies to gather in São Paulo, in November 2010, to engage in international collaboration, exchange information, network companies and research groups and develop business expertise.

The official languages for the conference are Portuguese and Spanish, but due to international interest, abstracts and papers in English will be accepted as well. Revised versions of the SB10Brazil best papers, plus selected national and international invited contributions, will be published in a special number of Revista Ambiente Construido, published by ANTAC, in 2011.
